- added SIGSEGV support for Linux/Alpha (to be checked), Darwin/PPC
- added uniform virtual memory allocation
  (supports mmap(), vm_allocate(), or fallbacks to malloc()/free())
- cleaned up memory allocation in main_unix.cpp
